French Rivers

FranceOther than Scotland, France holds the rivers which I have paddled the most often: it has a nearly endless supply of fast and continuous rivers. I particularly enjoy the water cooling you while paddling, and the sun being warm enough to dry you once you've stopped.

Advanced Rivers
Lower Guisane

The hardest river I've paddled in France, this is a river long grade 4 rapid which pushes even the most ardent paddlers. Between the upper and lower sections of this river, they claim more kit from GUCC that any other river in France.

Romanche

I really don't like this river. Not because I injured myself on it, but because it's tree infested, and far too static compared to the other french rivers.

Intermediate Rivers
Ubaye Race Course

The alpine version of the Middle Orchy, and it is superior in every way! I want this river to be in Scotland!

Onde

A very fast run, even by alpine standards. An awesome river in most ways tbh.

Briançon Gorge

Not the nicest smelling river, but paddling under the towns arch has an epic feel to it. Due to being a gorge, in high water this can drastically increase in difficulty level.

Upper Guil

In low water, this makes a technical intermediate run, but when the rivers rise, the gorge section becomes increasingly difficult.

Gyronde

Far simpler than the Onde, the river starts and ends with it's hardest sections, easing off in the middle. Ending at our normal campsite slalom course, it is useful for training intermediate paddlers.

Upper Guisane

Far easier than its other half, the Upper Guisane is often used our clubs first true introduction to alpine rivers. Its one named rapid "S-Bends" is brilliant, and merely a taster of what is offered in the 'Lower.

Upper Ubaye

More remote than most of the other rivers, the Ubaye makes up for this with its incredible scenery.

Beginner Rivers
Lower Durance

The traditional first river for most clubs, this is a friendly river, but doesn't teach or challenge much.

Upper Upper Guil

Like the Upper Guisane, but without S-bends, this river only runs in very high water.

Lower Guil

Fairly scenic and flat, but with an excellent finish.

Lower Clarée

Generally dull. Even the scenery isn't that good. High water improves it somewhat, but there are still better rivers out there.
